A gas cooker or hob is one of those purchases where the appliance is the easy half. The retailer delivers it, and then you discover the delivery team will not connect it, the old one is still attached, and the instruction manual says, correctly, that connection must be carried out by a competent registered engineer. That is where we come in. We install gas cookers and hobs across Greater Manchester from £90, with all gas work carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, and we can usually time the visit around your delivery slot.
Why this is not a DIY job
It is worth being plain about the legal position. Work on gas appliances and fittings must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer; that is the law, not a recommendation. The bayonet fitting behind a freestanding cooker looks like a plug-and-play connection, and mechanically it almost is, which is exactly the trap. What the bayonet does not do is test itself. A proper installation includes a tightness test on the whole installation, a check that the hose is the right type and not fouling anything hot, confirmation the appliance is stable and restrained, a look at the flame picture on every burner, and a check that the room has the ventilation the appliance needs.
Skipping those steps does not usually cause a problem, which is precisely why people skip them. The times it does cause a problem involve gas escaping into a kitchen. It is an hour of an engineer's time; have it done properly.
Freestanding cookers and bayonet points
The standard freestanding cooker installation connects to a bayonet point on the kitchen wall through a flexible hose. Where the point already exists, the job is straightforward: we check the existing point and pipework, fit the correct hose for the appliance (natural gas hoses and LPG hoses are not interchangeable, and hose classes vary by appliance type), connect, tightness test, commission the appliance, fit the stability chain or bracket that stops the cooker tipping when the oven door takes weight, and run every burner to check the flame.
Where there is no bayonet point, or it is in the wrong place for the new kitchen layout, we install or relocate it, running pipework sized correctly for the appliance. Undersized gas supplies are a genuinely common find in Manchester kitchens, particularly where a previous owner extended a run themselves; the symptom is burners that never quite reach full power.
Hob installations
Built-in hob installation is a two-trade job done in the right order. The worktop cut-out and cabinet work belong to the kitchen fitter; the gas connection, testing and commissioning belong to us. We connect hobs with rigid pipe or an approved flexible connection as the manufacturer specifies, keep the isolation valve accessible rather than buried behind a fixed panel, and test and commission as with any appliance.
If your hob is going in as part of a wider kitchen project, it is worth knowing we also handle the kitchen plumbing manchester side, sinks, wastes and appliance connections, so the gas and water work can land in one coordinated visit rather than two firms tripping over each other between the units.
Disconnections, swaps and dual fuel
We also do the unglamorous jobs around the edges. Disconnecting an old cooker safely, with the supply capped and tested rather than just valved off, so the delivery team will take it away. Reconnecting after a kitchen refit or a floor going down. Converting between appliance types, within what the supply and the appliance data badge allow.
One recurring point on dual fuel cookers and electric ovens: many need a suitable electrical connection as well as, or instead of, gas. We will tell you at booking what your appliance needs so the right trades are lined up, rather than discovering on the day that the cooker needs a circuit the kitchen has not got.
Landlords and paperwork
Every installation comes with written confirmation of the work and the checks carried out. For rented property this paperwork matters more: gas appliances in a tenancy need an annual landlord gas safety record, and a newly installed cooker should go straight onto it. We can do the installation and the gas safety certificate manchester in a single visit, which is the efficient way to do it between tenancies, and a habit worth having if you manage more than one property.
What it costs
Standard cooker connections to an existing bayonet point start from £90. Hob installations typically run £90 to £150 depending on the connection type and access. Disconnections start from £60, and new or extended gas supply pipework is quoted per job once we have seen the route. Prices are confirmed before work starts, and our plumber call out fee page sets out how we price everything else too.
Booked around your delivery
Cooker installation is part of the wider work we do as a gas engineer manchester firm, alongside boilers, fires and safety certificates, and we cover the whole of Greater Manchester, from city-centre apartments to family kitchens across all the areas we cover. The most useful thing we do on this job is simply turning up when the appliance does: tell us your delivery day when you call 0161 533 0201 and we will schedule the connection to match, so you are cooking on it that evening rather than staring at it in the hallway for a week.

Frequently asked questions
Can anyone fit a gas cooker, or does it have to be Gas Safe?
Connecting, disconnecting or working on any gas appliance must legally be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Sliding a cooker onto an existing bayonet hose is the one grey area people cite, but getting it wrong, or skipping the tightness test and checks that go with it, is how leaks happen. All our gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers.
How long does a gas hob installation take?
A like-for-like hob swap onto an existing supply usually takes one to two hours, including connecting with rigid pipe or an approved hose, tightness testing and checking the burners. If the worktop cut-out needs enlarging that is the kitchen fitter's job, and if the gas supply needs moving or extending we quote for that pipework up front.
Do I get a certificate when you install my cooker?
You get written confirmation of the installation and the safety checks carried out, which landlords and letting agents in particular should keep. If the appliance is going into a rental property we can do the installation and the landlord gas safety record in one visit, which is cheaper than two appointments.
Can you disconnect my old cooker so the new one can be delivered?
Yes. We cap the supply off properly so the pipe is safe and tested, not just turned off at the valve, and we can time it around your delivery slot. Retailers will often deliver but not connect, or refuse to remove an appliance that is still connected, so a planned disconnection visit saves the standoff in the kitchen.
How much does gas cooker installation cost in Manchester?
From £90 for a standard connection to an existing bayonet point, including testing and checks. Hob installations typically run £90 to £150. Running a new gas supply to a kitchen that has never had one is quoted per job based on the pipe route. Disconnections on their own start from £60.
