Some blockages you can rod. You feel the rods punch through, the water gurgles away, and everyone is happy until it blocks again a month later, because rodding made a hole through the problem rather than removing it. High-pressure water jetting is the tool for the blockages that rodding cannot shift and the ones that keep coming back. We run jetting equipment across Greater Manchester, on domestic drains, commercial kitchens and everything between, from £120.
How jetting works
A jetting unit pumps water at high pressure down a flexible hose with a nozzle on the end. The nozzle fires jets backwards and forwards at once: the forward jets cut into the blockage, and the rear-facing jets scour the pipe wall and pull the hose along the run under its own power. That combination is what makes jetting different from anything else. It does not just breach the blockage, it strips the pipe back to clean bore and flushes the debris away to the sewer.
Different nozzles do different jobs, and carrying the right ones matters. A standard nozzle handles general blockages and silt. A flail or chain arrangement deals with hard scale. A root-cutting nozzle takes on the fibrous stuff. We choose based on what the drain tells us, and where the situation is unclear we put a camera down first rather than guessing.
When rodding is not enough
We rod drains all the time; for a soft blockage near a manhole it is quick and cheap, and it is usually the first move on a standard blocked drain manchester call-out. But there is a clear list of situations where rodding is the wrong tool and jetting is the honest recommendation:
- Grease and fat. The classic kitchen drain problem. Fat coats the pipe wall in layers and narrows the bore over years. Rods slide through it; jetting strips it back to the pipe wall. Restaurant and takeaway drains around Manchester live and die by this.
- Scale and encrustation. Old cast iron and clay runs build up mineral and waste scale that rods barely mark.
- Root ingress. Fine roots find their way in through joints and cracks, then thicken into a mat that catches everything. A cutting nozzle clears them properly.
- Long runs and repeat offenders. If a drain has blocked twice in a year, the problem is the pipe condition, not bad luck. Jetting cleans the whole run rather than the metre around the blockage.
- No nearby access. Jetting hose travels a long way from a single access point, where rods run out of reach or jam on bends.
Roots, and why jetting is half the answer
Root ingress deserves its own honesty section. Manchester's older suburbs, the tree-lined roads of Didsbury, Heaton Moor, Prestwich and Monton, sit on a hundred-year-old network of clay drains with a joint every couple of feet. Roots follow the moisture, find a joint or crack, and once inside they thicken season by season until the drain blocks.
A root-cutting jet clears them and restores full flow, often for a year or two. But the roots came in through a defect, and they will return through the same defect. The permanent fix is to find the entry point with a cctv drain survey manchester and then repair it, usually with a patch liner over the damaged section, which our drain repairs manchester service handles without digging in most cases. We will always tell you which situation you are in: a one-off clearance that will hold, or a recurring problem worth fixing at the source.
Commercial kitchens and grease
Commercial jetting is its own rhythm. Restaurant, cafe and takeaway drains in Manchester block on a schedule set by their fat output, and waiting for the blockage means closing the kitchen on your busiest night. We jet commercial kitchen lines reactively when they have gone, and on a planned cycle for businesses that would rather never find out. A quarterly or six-monthly jet of the kitchen run costs far less than one emergency closure, and we can schedule it outside trading hours.
What a visit looks like
We arrive, find the access points, and look before we jet: lifting covers tells us a lot about where the problem sits and which way the run goes. We set up the jetter from the van, protect the working area, and clear the run, checking flow from upstream as we go. Where something feels wrong about how the blockage cleared, or the same address has called us before, we will recommend a camera look while we are set up, because the marginal cost is small and the information is worth having. Then we leave the area clean, which sounds like a small thing but matters a great deal on this particular type of work.
What it costs
Domestic jetting starts from £120. Long runs, heavy grease and root cutting are priced by the job, agreed before we start, and commercial contracts are quoted on the pattern of visits. If we arrive and the honest answer is a ten-minute rod rather than a jetting setup, we do the cheaper thing and charge for the cheaper thing. Our plumber call out fee page explains our approach to pricing generally.
Jetting is part of the full drain unblocking manchester service we run across the city, and we cover the whole of Greater Manchester, from city-centre commercial kitchens to suburban clay runs across all the areas we cover. If a drain is backing up now, or backing up for the third time this year, call 0161 533 0201 and we will bring the right tool for it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between rodding and jetting?
Rodding pushes a hole through a blockage; jetting removes the blockage and cleans the pipe wall behind it. Rodding is fine for a soft, one-off blockage near an access point. For grease, scale, roots, long runs or anything that has blocked more than once, jetting does a proper job rather than a temporary one.
Will jetting damage my drains?
Not when it is done by someone who knows what they are doing. We match pressure and nozzle to the pipe, and older or suspect pipework gets a gentler setup. If we think a drain is too fragile to jet safely, for example a badly cracked clay run, we will say so and camera it first rather than make a bad situation worse.
Can jetting clear tree roots in a drain?
Yes, a root-cutting nozzle will cut roots back and restore the flow. The honest caveat is that roots got in through a defect, a cracked pipe or open joint, and they will grow back through the same hole. Jetting solves today; a camera survey and a repair to the entry point solves it permanently.
How long does drain jetting take?
Most domestic jobs take one to two hours, including setup and a check of the flow afterwards. Long runs, heavy grease in commercial kitchen drains, or established root ingress take longer. We carry enough hose to reach most domestic runs from the van without dragging equipment through your house.
How much does drain jetting cost in Manchester?
From £120 for a standard domestic jetting visit. Heavier work, long or badly congested runs and commercial kitchen lines cost more, and we price it before we start. If we get there and the blockage turns out to be roddable in ten minutes, we will do that and charge accordingly rather than jetting for the sake of it.
