The combi is the default boiler for a reason. It heats water the moment you open a tap, it needs no cylinder or loft tanks, and it fits in a kitchen cupboard. For the majority of Manchester homes, the two-up two-downs of Levenshulme, the semis of Sale and Prestwich, the city centre flats, a well-chosen combi is the right answer. We supply and fit them across Greater Manchester from £1,800, and just as importantly, we will tell you when a combi is the wrong answer too.

What a combi actually is

A combination boiler does both jobs, heating and hot water, from one unit fed straight off the mains. There is no stored hot water, so nothing runs out and nothing sits in a cylinder going cold. Open the hot tap and the boiler fires, heats the water as it passes through, and stops when you close the tap.

The trade-off is that a combi can only heat water as fast as the mains can deliver it. One shower, no problem. Two showers at once and both turn lukewarm. That single fact decides most of our recommendations.

Is a combi right for your home?

The honest questions we ask before quoting:

How many bathrooms? One bathroom, possibly with a separate cloakroom: combi, almost every time. Two bathrooms used at the same time by a busy household: a cylinder system usually serves you better, and we will say so rather than fit something that disappoints.

What is your mains flow like? A combi is only as good as the water feeding it. Parts of Manchester, particularly older streets still on original supply pipes, have modest mains pressure. We measure the flow rate at your kitchen tap before recommending anything, because a 35kW combi on a poor main is money wasted.

Do you want the space back? Converting from a conventional system frees the airing cupboard and clears the loft tanks. In a smaller terrace that space is genuinely useful, and it is one of the most common reasons people switch.

Sizing without the sales pitch

Boiler adverts push big numbers, but oversizing is the most common mistake we see. A combi that is too large for the property short-cycles: it fires, overshoots, shuts down, and repeats, which burns more gas and shortens the boiler's life. For heating, a typical three bed semi needs far less output than most combis produce even at their minimum. For hot water, the flow rate figure, litres per minute at a usable temperature, matters more than the headline kilowatts.

We size from the actual house: radiator count, insulation, mains flow and how many people are queueing for the shower. If a 25kW boiler does the job, we will not quote you a 35.

Brands and warranties

We mainly fit Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal. All three have solid local parts availability, which matters more than people think: a boiler is only as good as how quickly it can be fixed in year seven. Fitted with a magnetic filter and a proper system clean, these carry manufacturer warranties of up to 10 or 12 years, provided the boiler is serviced annually. An annual boiler service manchester keeps that warranty valid and catches small problems while they are still small.

What the installation involves

A like-for-like combi swap is normally a one-day job: drain down, remove the old unit, hang the new boiler, connect gas, water, flue and condensate, then flush, fill, commission and test. We fit a magnetic filter as standard and dose the system with inhibitor, because sending clean water through a new heat exchanger is the difference between a boiler that lasts and one that does not.

A conversion from a conventional or system boiler takes about two days. We remove the cylinder and the tanks in the loft, cap and reroute the pipework, and upgrade the gas supply pipe if the new boiler needs it, which many do. Every installation is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, notified to building control, and registered with the manufacturer so your warranty actually exists on paper.

If your old boiler is limping rather than dead, it is worth reading about our boiler replacement manchester service first, which covers the repair-or-replace decision honestly, including the cases where nursing the old one along another winter is genuinely the better call.

What it costs

Combi installations start from £1,800 for a straightforward swap, including the boiler, filter, flush, controls, labour and registration. Conversions from a cylinder system typically run £2,500 to £3,200 depending on pipework. Flue reroutes, gas pipe upgrades and awkward access add to that, and every extra is itemised in writing before you commit. Our plumber call out fee page lays out our standard pricing across the board if you want the fuller picture.

We do not do finance-led selling or pressure tactics. You get a fixed written quote, it stays valid, and you decide in your own time.

Beyond combis

A combi is one option among several, and choosing between a combi, a system boiler and a heat-only replacement is really a conversation about your whole heating setup. That bigger picture, including controls, radiators and system health, lives on our boiler installation manchester page, which is the best place to start if you are weighing up options rather than set on a combi.

We install across the whole city and the surrounding towns, from Bolton and Bury down to Stockport and Cheadle. Check the areas we cover or ring us on 0161 533 0201 for a no-pressure quote. We are based at Vantage Quay in the city centre, so surveys are easy to arrange at short notice.

Frequently asked questions

Is a combi boiler right for my house?

For most homes with one bathroom, yes. A combi heats water on demand, frees up the airing cupboard and loft, and costs less to install than a system with a cylinder. Where it struggles is two showers running at once, so for larger households with multiple bathrooms we will often recommend keeping or fitting a cylinder instead.

What size combi boiler do I need?

For hot water, the number that matters is flow rate, not just kilowatts. A 24 to 30kW combi suits most two and three bed Manchester homes. Bigger is not better: an oversized combi cycles on and off, wastes gas and wears itself out. We size from your radiator count, mains flow rate and how you actually use hot water.

How long does a combi installation take?

A straight swap, old combi out and new combi in the same spot, is usually done in a day. A conversion from a conventional boiler and cylinder to a combi takes two days because we are rerouting pipework, removing tanks and capping off the old system. We confirm the duration in the quote.

Which combi boiler brands do you fit?

Mostly Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal, because parts are easy to get locally and the warranties are long, up to 10 or 12 years when installed and serviced correctly. We will fit other brands on request, but we only recommend boilers we are happy to stand behind.

Does the price include everything?

Our from £1,800 price covers the boiler, a magnetic filter, a chemical flush of the system, flue, controls, labour, commissioning and registration for the warranty and building regulations. If your job needs extras, a flue reroute, gas pipe upgrade or condensate work, they are itemised in the quote before you agree to anything.

Do you take the old boiler away?

Yes. We disconnect, remove and dispose of the old boiler, and on conversions we take the cylinder and loft tanks too. You are left with a working, commissioned system and the paperwork, not a pile of scrap in the front garden.
